Nepalese folk dance
Nepal has a very rich culture of dance and song. Over sixty ethnic groups live together in this predominantly Hindu and Buddhist country. They celebrate a tremendous variety of festivals throughout the year where each important occasion is celebrated with music, song and dance. There are the folk dances of each ethnic group, danced by the whole community often throughout the night. There are the traditional ceremonial dances performed in the street once a year for specific festivals.
There are the classical dances that have been passed down the generations, the sacred Vajrayana Buddhist dances performed in secret or the Hindu classics performed at the temples. There are also the Shamanic dances to heal the body and spirit. Charan performs a wide variety of Nepalese dance and is dedicated to preserving the unique dance culture of Nepal, which is rapidly being forgotten.
